Timeless design meets meaningful moments in a coastal home made for connection. A Home by the Sea On a windswept ridge above the Whanganui coastline sits a home designed to settle gently into its environment. With uninterrupted views to the west, this striking project embraces its natural surroundings through low-slung architecture, neutral materials, and an unwavering respect for the landscape. Recently featured in Life & Leisure magazine , the home stands as a testament to how architecture can tread lightly while still offering moments of calm, beauty, and connection. Ethan Outdoor Furniture is a natural complement to this approach. Handcrafted in Whanganui and made for New Zealand conditions, it brings the same ethos to outdoor living: timeless design, enduring performance, and a genuine sense of belonging. The setting featured here has been part of the home for over a decade, continuing to offer a place to gather, relax, and enjoy the ever-changing panoramic sea views. Explore the Ethan Round Setting featured in this project. A Place to Gather, a Space to Share At the heart of every Ethan setting is a deeper purpose – to create spaces that bring people together. Whether it's sharing stories over a long lunch, watching the sun dip below the horizon with a glass in hand, or simply spending time with those who matter most, these pieces are made for the rituals of everyday connection. The furniture becomes more than just an object – it becomes a centrepiece for meaningful moments with friends and family. Built for the Elements Life on the coast demands materials that can withstand the extremes. From salt-laden winds to strong summer sun, exposed locations require products built to endure. That’s why Ethan works exclusively with premium materials, including sustainably sourced Iroko hardwood , marine-grade stainless steel fixings, and Sunbrella performance fabrics . These elements are chosen not only for their strength but for how beautifully they age over time. The furniture featured in this project is over twelve years old and remains in excellent condition. Thanks to annual application of Ethan's timber protectant and seasonal care of the fabric covers , the setting has gracefully weathered its environment without compromising comfort or style, continuing to serve as a trusted gathering place year after year. Designed to Settle In Rather than dominate the space, the Ethan setting becomes part of it. Its clean lines, silvered timber tones and robust silhouette reflect the natural palette of the surrounding bush and coastline. The effect is quiet but intentional, furniture that feels like it was always meant to be there. This sense of timelessness is at the heart of Ethan’s design philosophy. Just as the home’s architecture blurs the boundary between indoors and out, the furniture extends an open invitation to pause, settle, and enjoy life outdoors year-round. Furniture designed not only for beauty and function, but to support a way of life where comfort, connection, and conversation flow as naturally as the coastal breeze. Local Craftsmanship with Longevity in Mind For over 40 years, Ethan has designed and crafted outdoor furniture in Whanganui, with a deep understanding of what New Zealand conditions demand. Every piece is made to order, carefully constructed by skilled makers using methods that prioritise structural integrity, longevity, and beauty. There’s a natural synergy between this furniture and the architecture of this coastal home. Both are rooted in place, shaped by their environment, and guided by a practical elegance. This shared approach makes the Ethan setting feel not like an addition, but a continuation – an extension of the home’s language and lifestyle. A place where people come together, time slows down, and life is savoured outdoors. In Their Words “We have had our Ethan table and bench-chair set for over 12 years now and still love it as much as the day we bought it. It is still in perfect condition, including the chair covers. We coat the set with Ethan's Driwrap product and spray the covers each year. We would highly recommend any of the Ethan products. The quality is second to none!!” This kind of enduring satisfaction isn’t accidental. It’s the result of purposeful design, honest materials, and a commitment to making products that outlast trends and seasons. As this home on the coast shows, the best furniture doesn’t just sit in a space – it becomes part of it, a silent witness to years of shared meals, quiet mornings, and warm conversations. A Legacy of New Zealand Craftsmanship and Connection About Ethan Our Essence Humble Beginnings The First Creation A Family’s Touch Our People Our Essence Established in 1981, our journey is rooted in a passion for creating outdoor furniture that invites connections, embodies strength, and endures through generations. Pictured, founder Jon Parson with an original Parson James High Back chair. Humble Beginnings Our story began in a modest corrugated iron shed, nestled along the banks of a native bush-clad stream on a 15-acre family property north of Albany, Auckland. It was here that Jon Parson channelled his passion for woodwork and design into creating the first pieces of what Ethan stands for today – furniture with heart, made with hands that care, designed to gather families and friends together. Pictured, the original humble corrugated iron shed. The First Creation It all started with a table and benches, handcrafted for a friend's garden. This setting wasn’t just furniture; it was the embodiment of Jon’s belief in beauty, functionality, and bringing people together. The name "Ethan" captures this spirit – denoting strength, endurance, and the promise of gatherings filled with laughter and stories. Pictured, the Parson family gathered on the original Ethan Settings outside the Albany workshop. A Family’s Touch From the beginning, Ethan has been a family affair, with Jon and Elizabeth’s children playing various roles over the years. Now 43 years later, the proud Ethan legacy continues under the guidance of their sons, Simon and Peter, together with their skilled and committed local team. The family takes pride in handcrafting internationally renowned outdoor furniture in this very special corner of the world. Pictured, Peter and Jon in one of the original Ethan workshops. Our People Ethan Outdoor Furniture thrives today under the stewardship of Jon’s sons, Peter and Simon Parson. With a deep respect for tradition and an eye towards innovation, Peter and Simon lead with the same passion and commitment that has defined Ethan from the start. Their hands-on approach ensures every piece of furniture embodies New Zealand craftsmanship, sustainability, and a family’s enduring love for creating spaces where memories are made.
